We set a baptismal date with Berta!! Sister Kirk came with us to a lesson with her, and it was amazing what a big difference it made to have a Spanish speaker there. Berta opened up so much and was asking questions, and commenting and everything! She agreed with everything we taught, but her only concern about being baptized was that every church she's been to, the people seemed great at church but then out of church, she would always see them doing bad stuff. But we explained to her that the church is more like a hospital for sinners than a museum for saints and that there will be imperfect people anywhere. The important thing is that the teachings of the church inspire us to do good. Whether or not others act on that is their choice. She agreed wholeheartedly with that and agreed to prepare to be baptized on June 14! Too bad I probably won't be there, but it's still exciting.
So on Thursday, we had a zone training meeting and it was great. President Shumway gave us some instruction on our teaching, and he was really hard on us but in a good way. He told us that we all give great sacrament talks on the gospel but that we're not good teachers. He wants us to spend as much time listening to our investigators talk as we do talking. That's something I REALLY need to improve on.
Later that night, the Springdale Marshallese missionaries asked us to stay in Springdale for the opening ceremonies of Marshall Day, which is their independence day. It turned out that the president of the Marshall Islands was there, along with the Marshallese basketball team. We got to shake hands with all of them. Definitely a highlight of the week!
Transfer calls are on Saturday. We are still waiting to find out whether our area will stay open or not. Yikes.
